Jane
Jane and Kristian just got married and need a new mattress. Kristian needs his mattress to be as firm as a table top, while Jane likes things more on the medium soft side. Jane never gets hot and Kristian is always hot. Jane is a back sleeper while Kristian is a side sleeper. She’s a petite 5’1” while he’s got a bulkier build and towers at 6’6”.
Unlike the competition, Helix can offer Jane and Kristian a Dual Comfort mattress
to begin them on marital sleep bliss.

The quality of the materials used in the mattress is critical for your comfort, and also for the longevity of the mattress. More budget priced mattresses often skimp on quality, which can lead to a bed that feels comfortable initially, but wears and sinks over time. The key things to look for are indicators that the materials are high quality.
After substantial research, our team has found that there is typically a fairly direct increase in quality as price increases for a standard 10" mattress, but only up to roughly the $1,000 price point for a queen size mattress. If you're in the market for a more premium, 13"+ mattress, quality levels off around $1,750 before the extra cost isn't worth it.
By Kristian von Rickenbach
Starting your mattress shopping experience can be intimidating, frustrating, and overwhelming. Walking into your neighborhood mattress retailer would have you believe that a quality mattress will cost you two, three, or four thousand plus dollars. So what’s the good news? That’s simply not true!
When we were doing our initial research and product design, we set out to understand why mattresses are so darn expensive. We’ve visited dozens of mattress stores, tried hundreds of mattresses, and even cut up beds to understand what was inside of them. After speaking to salespeople, manufacturers, and suppliers we uncovered a secret - there was nothing special about these more expensive mattresses that justified their sky high price tags.
“Retailers just dictate to their suppliers what price they want to charge, which results in mattresses that are absurdly expensive and made with materials that sound fancy, but serve no physical purpose.”
Co-Founder at Helix
Jerry Lin
Up to around $1,000 (Queen), brands use higher quality materials that improve the durability and comfort of your mattress - and you can trust the mattress is made in the USA. Price points well below this marker means somewhere costs were saved and corners cut, perhaps in the quality of the foams or fabrics.
Conversely, when you start to see prices that exceed $2,000 you're no longer efficiently paying for quality, but rather paying a high price for old school brand names or bells and whistles that don't matter. You will certainly find a $3,000 mattress comfortable, but you could have probably had the exact same comfort at a sub $2,000 price point. Why pay extra?
Ultimately, mattress price will be a function of your budget, what types of materials you are interested in, and how long you would like your mattress to last. But before you pay big bucks for big brand mattress at retail, it’s worth taking another look to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth.
